Cardio Fitness Exercises That Work
Choosing the best cardio fitness exercises is important.Time is a limited resource for most of us. While in theory in might be great to spend an hour every day on weights, followed by an hour of cardio followed by another hour of foam rolling, stretching and massage, fo the majority of people, this just isn’t going to happen.
Choose your Favourite Cardio Fitness Exercises
Actually, this three hour a day plan is pretty terrible! It is simply not necessary to spend that long to get into shape. So this means you need that thousand dollar machine you saw on home shopping, right? Actually, there are some pretty good machines out there that you could use for cardio fitness exercises (as well as a lot of overpriced rubbish.)
But there are also some great low-cost, low-tech options too. They are also time friendly. you don’t need a couple of hours to get the benefit from these cardio fitness exercises.
Do What you Enjoy
As I have mentioned before, personal health and fitness starts with doing what you enjoy. This is just as true here. If you like getting on a bike, just do it. In fact, getting outside is a great way to make any form of exercise enjoyable. I would certainly rather be out hiking somewhere than climbing stairs on a machine facing a basement wall!
The Best Cardio Fitness Exercises
So here they are. There are thousands of different cardio fitness exercises. These are some of the best.
- Hill sprints. If you are completely out of shape, you might want to avoid this, but if you want to burn fat and get in top shape, this flat out works.
- Bodyweight circuits”I can’t get to gym so I can’t train”. Oh really? spend 20 minutes doing circuits of push ups, burpees, bodyweight squats and planks and then tell me how important it is to get to a gym.
- Kettlebell swings. This is a great one, and you can get the same benefits as running on your heart and lungs, as well as strengthening the posterior chain.
- Roadwork. If you really want to run, what about taking a leaf out of the boxer’s handbook? Run, but every hundred yards or so drop down and do 10 push ups or bodyweight squats.
- Jump rope. The ultimate home conditioning workout. Think this looks easy? Try it!
- The heavy bag. Hitting the bag for a few three minute rounds is a great cardio fitness workout
- Running stairs. Find a local stadium and hit those stairs. Run up and walk down for 10 or so.
- Farmer’s walks. Pick up something heavy. Walk with it as far as possible. Drop it. Take a breath then repeat. This is about as far away as you can get from an hour on the seated bike watching Oprah. The results are about that much better too.
- 400 meters. This is really only for those who are in quite good shape. Running a 400m is hard. doing a few of them is about as tough as you can get.
- And finally, walk! Seems simple, doesn’t it? If most of spent more time walking around and less time sitting, taking the car or taking the elevator, we would be much better off. For me, a definition of madness might be driving to the gym, walking on a treadmill for an hour, drinking a high-calorie post-workout shake, then driving home. Can anyone else see something wrong with this picture?
Finding cardio fitness exercises that work isn’t difficult. Use some imagination and make it hard, but not too long. Everyone can find 20-30 minutes a day. Even if you can’t, a great workout can be had in 10 minutes with a skipping rope. No rope? Do bodyweight stuff instead! There really is no excuse not to be getting fitter, leaner and healthier in the months to come.
